本書では、まず中国における鉄道貨物輸送の成長と構造変化、貨物輸送における鉄道の位置づけを明らかにし、鉄道貨物輸送と地域経済の関係を考察した。次に、省市区を基礎単位とし、地域内ならびに地域間における鉄道貨物輸送がそれぞれの経済状況、産業分布、インフラ整備などとどのように関連しているかを実証的に分析した。計量分析に当たっては1985年から2002年までの28省市区別パネル・データを用い、固定効果モデル、重力モデル（グラビティモデル）を推計することにより、様々な要因の鉄道貨物輸送量に与える影響を明らかにした。
Recently, high rapid economic growth in China has contributed to the expansion of freight transportation. In this paper, the author investigates how rail freight transportation volume relates to regional economics, development of traffic infrastructure, and location of industries in each province. The analysis employs to panel data all provinces and special cities from 1985 till 2002. The author elucidates the factors affecting dispatching and arriving volume of rail freight and constructs gravity and fixed-effects models explaining railway freight transportation in each province.
