本論は、1945年にモンゴル人民共和国で出版され、遊牧生活の教訓書として知られる『牧業者への助言』という著作を取り上げ、20世紀のモンゴルに起こった社会体制、産業構造などの大きな変化を背景に、遊牧の現在と過去を対照させ、民主化以後遊牧が直面しているさまざまな深刻な問題を検討し、モンゴルにおける遊牧が現在まで持続されてきた理由とその将来への展望を探ったものである。
2部から構成される。第1部では、『牧業者への助言』が作られるに至った経緯、著者、その内容について検討する。第2部では、『牧業者への助言』のモンゴル語テキストの全内容のローマ字転写と訳を提示する。

About Advice to the Nomadic Herder
Sambuu's proposals for the nomadic life in Mongolia

　This thesis concerns Sambuu's widely-read work Advice to the Nomadic Herder, published in 1945 in the People's Republic of Mongolia, in which he sets out his proposals for the nomadic life.
The thesis consists of two parts. The first part details how the author came to write Advice to the Nomadic Herder, and examines the content of the book in detail. It contrasts the present and the past of Mongolian nomadism against the background of the big changes in the social regime and the industrial structure that happened in Mongolia in the 20th century. It considers the various problems that nomadism has faced following the country's democratization, and seeks to explain why nomadism in Mongolia has continued up to the present time. It also sets out nomadism's prospects for the future.
The second part of the thesis comprises both a Roman-alphabet transcript and a Japanese translation of the entire text of Advice to the Nomadic Herder.
